emotional diagrams for architecture

When Featherstone Associates were asked by South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre to extend and renovate their centre in Grays, the company decided to adopt insightful and inventive approach.
Spending time with counsel workers and women gave a necessary insight into the nature of the centre’s work and how women feel when they come there. On the basis of that information “emotional diagrams” were developed that served as inspiration for the design.
Featherstone Associates fitted shell shaped windows covered in wood tiles outside of the building. Privacy of the sitting area of the counseling rooms is created by the rigid windows in shape similar to “listening ears”. A central “ribbon wall” separates offices and counseling space acoustically and visually.
